Fun Strategy Games to Play

    Classic Games

    • Strategy games have existed for thousands of years. Games like chess, checkers, Shogi and Go have set rules with a set board where player strategy and decision making determine who wins. These games allow for great strategic depth and vast differences in skill levels between players. Checkers is the most accessible classic strategy games because of its simple rules; chess has more variety and strategic depth. Go and Shogi are popular in Asia and are more difficult to learn than checkers or chess. Shogi is sometimes called "Japanese Chess."

    Contemporary Games

    • For novice players, games with a balance of strategy and chance are often most fun, because it allows players to make errors or play against experts and still have a chance to win.
Hearts and Spades are two four-player card games that have a good balance of skill and chance. Settlers of Catan involves strategic thinking and interplay between players, while maintaining elements of chance in the form of dice rolling and drawing cards. Poker and Monopoly are also fun, though chance can play a large role in determining the winner.

    Video Games

    • While classic board and card games tend to involve a turn-based structure, strategic video games, known as real-time strategy games, allow players to make decisions and combat one another in real time.
Typical games involve creating buildings, gathering resources, and building an army in order to battle an opposing player. The strategic depth of these games can be very good, although game design can greatly influence the effectiveness of certain strategies. Also, a player's physical quickness and speed in decision making can be very important. Fun games include Starcraft, Warcraft III, Company of Heroes and Warhammer: Dawn of War II. Players can usually use single-player modes to learn how to use various units before competing against live opponents.
