How to Change the Fuel Filter on a 1999 Subaru Outback

    • 1). Park your 1999 Subaru Outback in a well ventilated area so that the gas fumes can dissipate. Walk to the back of the car and unscrew the gas cap to relieve pressure from the fuel filter.

    • 2). Open the hood and locate the fuel filter. The fuel filter is located behind the washer fluid container on the driver's side of the engine.

    • 3). Position a drip pan underneath the Subaru in the general location of the fuel filter so that it can catch any excess gas.

    • 4). Remove the hose clamps from the fuel lines on both sides of the fuel filter with a Phillips head screwdriver. Then, twist and pull the fuel lines off of the fuel filter by hand.

    • 5). Pull the fuel filter out of the bracket manually and place it in the drip pan.

    • 6). Insert the new fuel filter into the bracket. Push both fuel lines onto the fuel filter ports. Twist and turn the fuel lines until both fuel lines are completely on the fuel filter ports. Make sure that the fuel lines are on the correct fuel filter ports. The fuel line coming from the bottom of the engine is the "Inlet" fuel line. The fuel line that travels from the fuel filter to the engine is the "Outlet" fuel line. Each port on the fuel filter is marked "In" and "Out"

    • 7). Reposition the hose clamps over the fuel lines and screw them down tight with the Phillips head screwdriver. Walk back to the rear of the car and put the gas cap back on.

    • 8). Turn the ignition on and off three times. This will prime the new fuel filter and remove any air from the filter and fuel lines. Then crank the engine and let it run for about one minute.

    • 9). Inspect the new fuel filter for any leaks, then turn off the ignition and close the hood.
