Home & Garden Do It Yourself

Garage Organization Ideas

As Winter turns to Spring many of us are either looking forward to, or dreading Spring cleaning. Often a big part of this cleaning is the garage.

Organizing the garage doesn't have to be a dreaded chore. When taken step by step cleaning and organizing the garage can be an enjoyable undertaking. Breaking the chore into manageable chunks or sessions can't help dispel any feelings of overwhelm.

Assessing the Mess

Usually a quick assessment of what's already in the garage will be enough to get a handle on what needs to be done. Keep in mind the items you want to put in the garage. These usually consist of Winter sporting goods and other items that are used often in the Winter but won't be used until next year.

Planning for the Sun

Now that the days are getting longer and temperatures warmer there are undoubtedly things that you've put in the garage for storage before the Winter that you'll either want to take out or make more convenient to access over the Summer.

Summer items should now be moved to areas of the garage that are easily accessible. Nothing is more frustrating than planning a summer camping trip or jaunt to the beach and not being able to find the tent or your favorite beach blanket.

Successful garage storage and organization consists of being able to find what you need when you need it. Storing items that you anticipate using frequently on shelves that are at eye level and within easy reach is a good idea.

Garage storage systems can be bought from home improvement stores. They come already assembled or can be built at home pretty easily. Just keep in mind the purpose of shelving or cabinets, installing a shelf system that can't withstand the weight of what you put on it or a cabinet that won't properly hold your skis will be frustrating.

Gone Fishing

Storing rods and reels is a breeze with a fishing rod rack. Hooks for hanging various types of fishing gear, and slots to hold fishing rods are common features. These units are usually mounted on coasters so you can move them around the garage easily.

Rod racks are a perfect complement to a well thought out garage storage system. Many rod racks come with drawers for storing lures and other fishing related gear.

Unloading your gear is easy when you can back your car up in the garage and put it all away neatly because your garage storage is well thought out.

Other Benefits of Garage Organization

Many organizers for the garage come with wheels that allow the unit to be easily rolled around. An organizer that holds all your common yard work tools can be rolled right down the driveway to the area you're working in.

Stock these storage units with rakes, clippers, shovels, and brooms and your Spring cleaning and year round cleaning chores will be easier than ever. Just think how you won't have to go back and forth to the garage to dig through your storage and find the right tool for the job!
