Troubleshooting the Tailgate Latch on an '85 Blazer
- 1). Lift the latch handle and lower then the tailgate. If the tailgate cannot be opened the locking mechanism may be fouled, rusty or corroded.
- 2). Spray a lubricant into the key hole on the tailgate. This will help to dissolve rust and remove any dirt and grime that may be in the locking mechanism.
- 3). Insert the ignition key into the lock and turn it clockwise and counterclockwise several times to free the tumbler and cylinder mechanism.
- 4). Pull the latch handle to find out if you can now lower the tailgate. If the lock is still stuck, go to the next step.
- 5). Remove the screws securing the cover plate using the Phillips head screwdriver. Remove the access cover and set it aside.
- 6). Verify that the control rod and linkages move and are not being obstructed. If the control rod or linkage is broken it will need to be replaced.
