How to Oversleep
Instructions
1Pretend as though you're not going to oversleep. Tell everyone that you're going to wake up early and get some extra work done, or get a good start on the day, or anything else equally meaningless. It's not important what you tell people; what's important is that they don't expect you to oversleep. Surprise is critical.
2
Stay up far too late. This is a key component of oversleeping. You can't go to sleep at the same time that you usually do and expect a solid oversleeping performance. You must stay up late, but you also have to say things like, "Man, I really should be getting to sleep. It's late."
3
Add one more. Whether it's one more show on TV, one more game of video football or one more slice of pizza, what's important is that you don't hold back. Treat yourself to one more than you really should. Feel free to say things like, "Oh, I really shouldn't, but OK," or, "I don't know, I need to get to sleep. Fine, one more."
4
Set your alarm. One of the best moments of oversleeping is waking up to your alarm, looking at it for a moment of two, and then turning it off and going back to sleep. Do not deprive yourself of this pure pleasure. Set the alarm, and then, joyfully, turn it off and go back to bed.
5
Choose your night carefully. Oversleeping works best if you can wake up in the morning to something that makes you want to stay in bed. Cold nights, rainy nights, snowy nights--they all give very good reasons for you to reach out, turn off your alarm, look out your window and then simply decide to roll over and go back to bed. Embrace this impulse.
6
After waking up late, spend the rest of the day telling everyone about how you overslept and asking them how it could have happened. Say things like, "But how could I have slept until 4 p.m.? It's so strange." Act really confused, as though it had nothing to do with you. Treat it as an objective event and talk about it as much as possible. Enjoy flashbacks to the moment that you turned off your alarm, settled into your blankets and submitted to sleep.
