How to Rebuild the Roof on a Mobile Home
- 1). Lay rows of fan-fold insulation lengthwise across the roof and duct tape the seams. Cut excess insulation off with a utility knife. Screw the insulation in place with a drill and 3-inch sheet metal screws with neoprene washers.
- 2). Set 1-inch by 4-inch furring strips lengthwise across the roof, spaced 2 feet apart. Feel the surface of the roof to locate the rafters and snap chalk lines to mark their locations. Secure the furring strips to the rafters with 3 1/2-inch deck screws.
- 3). Cut the metal sheet, using a circular saw, the width of the roof plus 8 inches for overhang. Place the first metal sheet on the far end of the roof, flush with the end of the mobile home and with equal overhang on both sides. Insert foam closure strips into the ends of the metal sheet. Use 3 1/2-inch deck screws with neoprene washers to attach the sheet to the furring strips.
- 4). Measure and cut holes to fit over vents. Apply a bead of neoprene rubber roof cement around all vents to seal them. Install new rubber boot vents to replace cracked or damaged boots.
- 5). Attach gables to each end of the roof with 3 1/2-inch deck screws on the top and bottom, spaced 12 inches apart.
- 6). Apply a protective covering with a long-handled paint roller and white elastomeric coating. Follow the manufacturer's directions for the number of coats and drying times.
