National Park - Yellowstone
Yellowstone National Park is a national park established by U.
S.
Congress in March 1 of 1872.
Yellowstone covers an area of about 3,472 square miles and is located mostly in the state of Wyoming and partly gets into Montana and Idaho.
It is on the headwaters of the Yellowstone River, from which it gets its historical name.
Made up of lakes, rivers, mountain ranges and canyons, the Yellowstone National Park is famous for its geothermal activity and the wildlife.
Around 80% of the park is forest and the rest of the land area is grassland.
Yellowstone Lake is 7,732 feet (2,376 m) above sea level which makes it one of the highest altitude lakes.
Covers 136 square miles (352 kmĀ²), centered on top of the largest super volcano on the continent called the Yellowstone Caldera.
Caldera is an active volcano because of several eruptions over the last two million years.
Profs of eruptions, lava flows and rocks are everywhere.
Half of the world's geothermal energy is located in Yellowstone because of the ongoing volcanic activity.
Average depth of the lake is 139 feet (42 m) but the deepest spot is around 400 feet.
Yellowstone Lake also has around 110 miles of shore line which is perfect for vacationers and wild life (grizzlies, wolves, herds of bison, gray wolf) to enjoy.
It is also perfect for quality fly fishing of cutthroat trout which, often of very good size, can be located right along the shoreline.
The reason for that is the bulk of all aquatic insect activity occurs in the warmer, shallower and protected waters found on the shore.
Yellowstone Lake is too big and too cold to support solid aquatic activity over its entire surface.
It is also interesting that Yellowstone Lake gets covered with 3 feet (1 m) thick ice in winter, from early December until late May or early June.
Just where shallow water covers hot springs, it stays unfrozen.
During the winter, visitors often access the park using either snow coaches or snowmobile.
The Continental Divide is the line that divides the flow of water between the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean.
It runs through the southwestern part of the Yellowstone National Park.
Some of the rivers such as Yellowstone and Snake rivers are near each other but, due to the divide, the Snake River drains into the Pacific Ocean while the Yellowstone River drains into the Atlantic Ocean through the Gulf of Mexico.
Yellowstone National Park sits in the Yellowstone Plateau region which spans the continental divide between the Northern and Middle Rocky Mountains, at an average elevation of around 2,400 meters.
The most visited and prominent mountain peak in the park is Mount Washburn that sits at 10, 243 feet above sea level.
