Legend has it that following the launch in 1870, the ship was fueled by dried llama dung. In 1914, diesel engines were installed.
Many years after being decommisioned from the Peruvian navy, the ship was rescued from the scrap heap in the late 1970s. It is being restored from the keel up and floats at anchor with the intention of one day being able to carry passengers around the lake.
