Breathe Deeply

To many people the sight of sunshine in the spring and summer months is a welcomed and celebrated time.
Feeling the warmth on our backs, the ripening of new seasons delicious fruits and vegetables, the chance to open all the doors and windows around the home and let some fresh air in...
but to some this is not a welcomed occasion.
Many people dread this time of year as with the change brings an increase in allergies and pollen causing sneezing, watery eyes, nasal discharge and general discomfort.
Much of the sneezing and other symptoms are from an imbalanced immune system response that is reacting to a non-threatening allergen.
These allergens can be dust, dust mites, animal hair, fungus spores, feathers, grass and flower pollen and more.
These tiny airborne particles present no real threat or danger to the body and there response is exaggerated as the immune system mounts a huge defensive attack.
The key to minimising this problem is to focus on re-balancing the immune system to prevent it from over-reacting to these non-threatening substances.
This is done through evaluating gut health (as at least 70% of our immune system lines our gut walls) and supporting the immune system with key nutrients and herbs, which focus on short-term health and long-term solutions.
One herb that is key to the process is Echinacea.
This herb is now widely researched and has a unique ability to help balance the immune system - this means that in situations of overactive and under-active immune response it helps to heal the tissues and bring the body back to balance and full health.
Another fantastic component of this herb is its ability to work as a lymphatic cleanser supporting the natural clearance of the sinuses and upper respiratory tract and allowing the person to breathe easy.
Other herbs that are critical for supporting the process of clearing sinuses, supporting the immune system and reducing all symptoms include horseradish, garlic, ginger, and fenugreek.
Eating these foods in your diet (if you can handle the heat!) is a powerful contribution to relieving nasal congestion and clearing out those sinuses.
These are warming herbs and provide broad-spectrum immune support and healthy circulation through the upper respiratory tract.
If eating these herbs is not quite your thing, supplementing with them can help.
Another important nutrient for the immune system is vitamin C.
Much research is now produced whereby vitamin C is shown to help enhance and balance the immune system by regulating the actions and increasing (if needed) numbers of white blood cells to attack viruses and keep our body healthy.
This nutrient is unfortunately lacking in many people despite being abundantly available in the food chain.
This is partly because vitamin C is a very delicate vitamin easily destroyed by heat, light and age - so leaving your fruit bowl in the sunshine for a week means the vitamin C content of your fruit will be much reduced!  In some cases, supplementing with vitamin C is recommended as this important vitamin is too crucial to health to be lost so easily.
