Health & Medical Diabetes

What Is Diabetes?

Diabetes can be called an illness or rather a chronic medical condition, which occurs as the result problems with production and supply of insulin in one's body.
The food that we eat is turned into glucose, which is a form of sugar.
And it is this glucose is the source of energy for our body.
Body uses this very form of sugar to give power to muscles and other tissues.
And, in order for this energy source to be absorbed by each and every muscle and tissue in the body, it is from the blood, insulin, a hormone is mandatory.
It is when there are problems with the production and supply of this hormone, that we call the condition as diabetics.
Insulin is produced in a gland called the pancreas, which is situated behind the stomach.
It is released though cells called beta cells.
When the beta cells fail to produce enough insulin for your body or when the body is not able to use its insulin effectively, the condition is referred to as diabetes.
Due to this ineffective absorption of glucose from the blood, people diagnosed with diabetes cannot use a normal intake of glucose, as this will lead to high amounts of glucose in the sugar.
This condition, with high blood sugar levels is known as hyperglycaemia.
Such high levels of blood sugar can create complications.
Therefore, diabetes is a chronic condition, which lasts life-long and requires careful management and control.
Proper food habit, diet, exercise, regular blood sugar testing, and treatment therapy, people living with diabetes can lead active lives.
But, if left alone, without these and proper treatment and control, it can lead to serious long-term complications including strokes, kidney diseases and failures, high blood pressure, blindness, nerve problems, cardiovascular troubles, amputations etc.
Short term complications are bacterial or fungal infections like ringworm, athlete's foot and vaginal infections.
