Carbon Reduction Commitment and What it Means

The carbon reduction commitment is a proposed compulsory system whereby a carbon reduction target of 1.
2 million tonnes should be met by the UK by 2020.
In further target the UK is aiming to cut emissions by 80 percent by 2050.
This is a significantly larger target than the original target of 60 percent.
When it comes to the reducing the carbon footprint of the British Isles, it seems the UK government has put in place some really challenging targets - in the form of the reduction commitment - which will be met with enthusiasm by many people.
Of course, some will say that the CRC does not go far enough.
The country found out about the Carbon Reduction Commitment in the 2007 White Paper for energy, put forward on the 23rd of May 2007.
In 2006 consultation displayed strong support for it to be compulsory rather than operated on a voluntary basis.
The Carbon Reduction Commitment is to be brought in under powers of enablement planned as part of the Climate Change Bill.
A consultation into the proposed scheme's implementation was brought about in the June 2007.
The Carbon Reduction Scheme is set to apply to groups and organisations that have metered electricity consumption (half hourly) more than 6,000 MWh over a year.
Organisations that qualify for CRC would have all of their energy usage scrutinised by the scheme, this also would include emissions from what is known as direct energy usage along with as electricity bought.
Organisations that include branded hotel chains, supermarket groups, banking corporations, centralised government agencies and big Local Authorities - mostly fall below the required level for the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme - but do in reality account for about 10 percent of British carbon emissions.
Emissions which would be covered by the EU Energy Trading Scheme and also by a Climate Change Agreement are considered to be exempt from the Carbon reduction Scheme.
This is also true of groups with more than 25% of their emissions covered by Climate Change Agreements.
The Carbon reduction Commitment is something that many organisations will need to come to grips with over the coming years.
It begins in 2010, so it is advisable that companies and organisations that will be affected by it - start planning for it right now.
The news can only be good for the well being of the nation - and indeed the image of British business at home and around the globe.
