How to Eliminate a Hiss When Recording From Total Recorder

    Install Add-on

    • 1). Visit the Total Recorder "Downloads" page. Locate the "Audio Restoration Add-on" item in the page's "Add-on" section. This add-on removes hiss from Total Recorder audio.

    • 2). Click the "Free Download" button next to that item. A pop-up window opens.

    • 3). Click the "Save File" button in that window to save the file to your hard drive.

    • 4). Locate that file after it downloads and double-click it. A wizard will walk you through the installation process and install the add-on into Total Recorder.

    Configure

    • 1). Launch Total Recorder. Click the "Process" button at the top of the user interface. A drop-down menu opens.

    • 2). Click "Audio Restoration" then click "Hiss Removal" to open the "Hiss Removal" pop-up window. The window contains a "Playback" text box and a "Recording" text box.

    • 3). Locate the "Noise Level" slider. This slider controls the amount of hiss Total Recorder removes. Click and drag the slider to the right to remove more hiss, or drag it to the left to remove less. The software vendor recommends not dragging the slider all the way to the right. This may cause sound distortion. Consider leaving the slider in its default position initially. You can adjust it later if you need to tweak the value.

    • 4). Locate the "Accuracy" slider. Drag it to the right to increase the accuracy of the hiss removal software. Drag the slider to the left to decrease the accuracy. The software vendor recommends leaving the slider near the mid position on the scale.

    • 5). Click the "Save As" button in the "Preset" section if you wish to save your slider settings. The "Saving Preset" pop-up window opens. Enter a name for the preset and click "OK" to close the pop-up window. Saving presets is an ideal way to apply different hiss removal settings to different recordings. For instance, if you save a preset named "Maximum," that preset's "Noise Level" slider may be set at a high value. Another preset named "Minimum" might reduce less hiss.

    • 6). Locate the "Bypass" check box at the bottom of the "Hiss Removal" window. Later, as a recording plays, you can open the "Hiss Removal" window and check that box. This will prevent Total Recorder from removing hiss temporarily.

    • 7). Locate the "Residual Output" check box. You can also put a check mark in that check box as a recording plays. When you check this box, Total Recorder will play only the audio that it is removing.

    • 8). Click the small "X" button in the upper right corner of the "Hiss Removal" window to close the window. The next time you record audio using Total Recorder, it will apply the hiss settings that you set up.

    Process a Single File

    • 1). Back up the file you wish to process. Saving a backup copy ensures that you do not lose your original file.

    • 2). Launch Total Recorder and press "Ctrl+O." A file selection window opens. Locate the file you wish to process and double-click it to open it.

    • 3). Click "Process" then "Audio Restoration." Click "Hiss Removal" to open the "Hiss Removal" window.

    • 4). Click "Playback" to listen to the audio. Adjust the "Noise Level" and "Accuracy" sliders to remove hiss as the audio plays.

    • 5). Click "Apply to File" to remove the hiss from the file. Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the "Hiss Removal" window to close that window.
