How to Get Certified to Work as a Cosmetologist

- 1). Research cosmetology schools. Find one that offers a program you like and apply for it. Most schools require a high school diploma or an equivalent. Many community colleges and technical schools offer programs in cosmetology. Check the requirements to get a cosmetology license in your state.
- 2). Enroll in the school. Most schools offer both full- and part-time programs. Most students will complete an average of 1,500 hours in their program.
- 3). Take the licensing exam once you are ready to get your cosmetology certification. Some people choose to do an apprenticeship first to gain experience.
