How to Develop an Evacuation Map

    • 1). Get a copy of the blueprints or a schematic of the building for which you are designing the evacuation map. If the evacuation map is for an area or outdoor venue, get a copy of the entire property that shows all entrance points, exit points, buildings and structures.

    • 2). Copy or replicate the site or building drawings, and save a copy to use with a mapping or drawing program. Mark all exit doors, exit points, stairwells and other places in the building or facility that can be used as an escape route in the event of an evacuation. Make sure to highlight all exits and ways out of the building or area clearly so that they can be noticed immediately upon looking at the evacuation map.

    • 3). Make copies of the evacuation map, and distribute copies to all security personnel who are responsible for the property or area. Make additional copies of the evacuation map and give them to people who frequent the facility or area, such as employees or other staff. Post copies of the evacuation map in visible and frequented areas so that everyone can quickly find the map and the escape routes in an emergency.

    • 4). Update the evacuation map at least once a year and make changes as necessary. Change any exits and update the map when a building or area is undergoing renovation or construction and a previously noted exit point is blocked. Keep your evacuation maps updated and current.

    • 5). Notify local first responders, such as the fire department and ambulance company, about your evacuation map. Send copies of your evacuation map to all interested parties so they have the information on hand in the event of an emergency.
