How to Remove Gas Tank Residue
- 1). Remove the gas tank from the vehicle. Contact your car's manufacturer or owner's manual for detailed description on what is attached to the gas tank and how to remove it.
- 2). Empty any remaining gas out of your tank. Much of the residue will come out with the first emptying of the tank. Dump contents into an empty bucket or pail to dispose of later.
- 3). Add dish detergent to the tank and spray thoroughly with a water hose on the highest, or strongest spray setting. This spray will force of any residue that is stuck to the tank, and the soap will give you a cleaner tank overall. Empty any remaining water and residue into the bucket.
- 4). Dry the inside of your tank thoroughly. This can be done by pointing a hair dryer into an opening until dry, or you can wait 24 hours to let the air dry.
- 5). Tape any connection holes on your tank with duct tape. Only the main hole where the gas pump enters should not be covered.
- 6). Pour about a cup of muriatic acid or fuel cleaner into the tank and shake the tank. This will help loosen any residue that the previous steps left. The muriatic acid or fuel cleaner also eats into any remaining residue that may be left. Shake to make sure that your entire tank is saturated with the acid or fuel cleaner. Leave it sitting for approximately 24 hours.
- 7). Empty the tanks contents into the bucket or pail. Turn on the hose to the strongest setting again and hose out the inside.
Allow at least 24 hours to dry. - 8). Reassemble your gas tank. Follow manufacturer's instructions to put the gas tank back into the car properly.
