How to Build a Wooden Drying Rack

    • 1). Create a frame with two pieces of 30-inch 2-by-4 and two pieces of 8-inch 2-by-4. The longer pieces are the sides of the frame and the shorter pieces are the top and bottom. The 8-inch piece at the top should be even with the top edges of the 30-inch 2-by-4 and the piece at the bottom should be off set one inch from the bottom edges of the 30-inch 2-by-4. Screw the pieces together. Repeat this to make a second side.

    • 2). Place one of the frames on a flat surface. Measure 1-1/2 inches from the bottom of the frame on both of the 30-inch pieces of 2-by-4 and make a mark. This is the center of the first hole for the rack.

    • 3). Measure 3 inches up from the initial marks and make two more marks. Continue measuring up the 30-inch pieces, making marks every 3-inches until you have a total of nine marks on both pieces of the 30-inch 2-by-4. Mark both frames in this manner.

    • 4). Drill a hole using the 1-inch drill bit at each mark. Drill down approximately 1-inch into the wood.

    • 5). On one frame, place the 1-inch dowels into the holes you just drilled. Tap them into the hole using the hammer.

    • 6). Line up the holes on the second frame with the dowels protruding from the first frame and hammer the second frame into place, making sure the dowels are snug in their holes.
