How to Teach Heparin Infusion

    • 1). Instructions should be given on how to properly weigh the patient. This information is needed to calculate accurate Heparin dosages.

    • 2). Gather the results of baseline blood work to review with the student, and explain how they apply to the patient's care. This includes FBE, APTT and PT.

    • 3). Instruct the individual on how to prepare the correct heparin concentration. Use 10 Units/kg/mL to calculate the appropriate amount. Heparin is prepared in 50mL of compatible fluid, and this should be demonstrated by the instructor.

    • 4). Explain and demonstrate how to configure the infusion pump to accept the loading dose and subsequent maintenance doses.

    • 5). Show how to give the heparin loading dose as written in the medical order. Use 80 Units/kg to calculate the correct dosage, not to exceed 5000 Units over a 10-minute period.

    • 6). Begin infusion at the rate written in the medical order.
