Hawaiian Luau Weddings
- Hawaiian luau weddings are held outdoors underneath a large tent. The walls of the tent are made of palm fronds traditionally, and the poles of the tent can be decorated with red ginger or ti leaves. Plenty of flowers (synthetic or real) should be used to decorate the tables and corners of the tent.
- It's best to have Hawaiian music featured at the luau wedding. A friend or family member traditionally provides the entertainment for a luau, and should have a ukulele if live music will be played. A compilation of Hawaiian reggae or slack-key guitar music can be purchased for the ceremony and reception as well.
- When friends and loved ones enter the tent for the luau wedding, it is Hawaiian custom to greet each guest by saying "Aloha" and placing a lei made of shells or flowers around the guests' necks. A hug or kiss on the cheek is also customary after presenting the lei.
- The food served during a Hawaiian luau wedding varies. It reflects the sweet fruits of the islands, as well as savory, filling dishes. Entrees like Kalua pig and Lomi salmon are common, while fruits like pineapple and mango are eaten for dessert.
- As part of the entertainment at the wedding ceremony or reception, hula dancers are often called on to enhance the beauty of the occasion. To include this in your wedding, you can hire professional hula dancers to perform, or take some hula lessons a few weeks before the wedding in order to prepare a special dance for your spouse.
