Old Fort in Surat – Where history lives on

The Old Fort in Surat has quite a bit of history behind its sturdy walls. Built in the 14th century the fort is still very much an object of admiration and is visited by hundreds of locals and international travellers to the region.

Built during the reign of Muhammed Tughlak the fort was built with the intention of fortifying the city against the attacks of the Bhils. Considered of all the Sultans in India as the most disruptive, Emperor Tughlak was even referred to as ‘Mohammed the bloody'. But history did not confine him to this title alone and depicts him as an endearing person and one who was benevolent.

The fort was his brain child to protect his soldiers from the attacks of the brutal Bhils. Today, the Old Fort offers visitors an amazing lesson in ancient architecture that includes iron bars and high walls. Tourists who flock to Surat often stop at the Old Fort to marvel at this unique design that has stood for centuries gone by, and now remain as the only witness of the empire that constructed it. Although Surat has many little monuments that are scattered throughout the city the Old Fort is one that undoubtedly deserves one's attention.

When a traveller is getting to know a new culture one aspect that speaks volumes is its cuisine and the Surat region is no exception. The Surti cuisine is renowned throughout the whole of India and it is a must that one spend some time savouring this delicious cuisine.

An interesting point to note is that the more popular types of food associated with Gujarat, originated from Surat. Among the more popular dishes the Locho, Rasawala Khaman, Surti Ghari and the distinct Chinese food is a must try.
