How to Drive With a Provisional License

    • 1). Drive by yourself only between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. unless you are going to school, going to work or have an emergency. Most states restrict provisional license holders from driving alone between midnight and 5 a.m. unless it's for work or school. Emergencies are also an exception.

    • 2). Drive only with passengers who are over 21 unless they are family members. States don't allow provisional license holders to have passengers in the car who are younger than 21 unless they are part of your immediate family. Some states, such as Maryland, allow you to drive with passengers under 18 if you have a qualified, supervising driver in the car as well.

    • 3). Drive without using a cell phone or other wireless communication devices. In many states, it's illegal for drivers of any age to drive with a cell phone. Provisional licensed drivers should refrain from using a wireless device no matter in what state they are driving.
