Treating Dog Ear Infections

    Signs and Symptoms

    • Much like humans, dogs can suffer from many ailments including ear infections. Unlike people, it is not very easy for a dog to communicate when he is suffering from ear pain. If you notice that your dog is scratching at or rubbing his ear, if is temperament is dull and lethargic and if he does not respond to you commands as readily, he may be suffering from an ear infection.

    Vet

    • If you suspect that your dog may have an ear infection, take him to the vet right away. Like humans, dog ear infections must be treated with antibiotics. Not treating it can lead to further infection and, in some cases, permanent hearing loss. Follow your vet's instructions for giving your dog antibiotics and make sure you give him the prescribed amount in its entirety. The vet may also prescribe soap to clean your pet's ears on a regular basis.

    Clean your Dog's ears

    • Clean your dog's ears with the vet prescribed soap as you are directed. This will likely involve holding your dog's ear open, pour the soap into his canal until it is filled to the brim. Repeat this with both ears. Massage his ear canals so that soap works its way through. Use a paper towel to wipe the excess soap from your dog's ears. Be aware that he will probably shake his head spraying a small amount of soap in the surrounding area. Offer your dog a treat when you are through as this will probably be a slightly uncomfortable process for him.

    Avoid Water in Ears

    • Avoid getting water in your dog's ears when you bathe him. While regular bathing is beneficial for your dog's coat and cleanliness, getting water in his ears good lead to ear infections if it remains stagnant. You may want to prevent you dog from swimming as well, if he suffers from chronic ear infections.

    Pay Attention

    • Pay attention to your dog's behavior. Although they do not speak, dogs can communicate how they feel. If you notice changes in behavior it could indicate that he is suffering from a health problem such as an ear infection. By paying close attention to your dog, you should be able to know when he needs to see a vet.

    Healthy Habits

    • Maintain healthy habits for your dog. A healthy diet, regular exercise and grooming will all contribute to the overall health of your dog.
