BATHINDA: The Dera factor which has always been influential in the Punjab elections certainly was not the deciding factor this time because of the neutral attitude of Dera Sirsa chief Gurmit Ram Rahim. The electorate voted for the development in Punjab during the SAD-BJP regime.

Akalis who had won merely 19 seats as compared to 37 seats of Congress in the last assembly elections, made a superb comeback by winning 33 seats in the Malwa belt. Congress has won 32 seats this time. In Bathinda it was being speculated that Jassi whose daughter is married to son of Dera Sacha Sauda would get benefit of 25-30 thousand dera followers. Moreover, dissident Akali leader Charanji Lal Garg who had served as a cabinet minister in Badal's government also campaigned in Jassi's favour after joining Congress but Sarup Chand Singla despite all odds won the election as he had been instrumental in getting large numder of developmental work done in Bathinda urban, which happens to be part of Harsimrat Kaur Badal's parliamentary constituency.

Sarup Chand Singla, a Bathinda businessman contesting from SAD had lost the 2007 elections from Dera Sirsa's chief brother-in-law Harminder Singh Jassi (Congress) with a margin of 12,000 votes. Singla who is one of Sukhbir's close aides was fielded again this time as an Akali candidate and defeated the incumbent MLA with a margin of 6645 votes.

The contest was triangular in Bathinda with PPP candidate Sukhdeep Singh Bhinder also jumping in the fray but unfortunately PPP was not even able to add even a single ticket to its basket and president Manpreet Badal himself lost election at his home constituency Gidderbaha and Maur.

Harminder Jassi had not been involved with the masses during the last five years and hardly any developmental work was done in Bathinda out of MLA's financial quota. Moreover, PPP also divided the anti-SAD votes which this time affected the vote bank of Congress.
