How to Help an Ear Infection
- 1). Place a hot water bottle or hot pack over the infected ear. The application of heat will loosen any fluid that has deposited in the ear while alleviating pressure and pain associated with the infection. Cover the hot water bottle with a towel before applying it to the ear. Never apply the heat pack directly to the ear. Leave the hot water bottle on your ear for 20 minutes.
- 2). Apply an over the counter ear medication to the infected ear. There are numerous ear drops to that can treat an infection.
- 3). Put tea tree oil drops in the infected ear. Tea tree oil includes a natural antibiotic called terpineol, which can help reduce the ear infection. Using a medicine dropper, place two drops of tea tree oil in the infected ear. Tea tree oil can also help lessen any pain associated with the infection. Apply the drops twice daily at the first signs of an itch or irritation.
- 4). Apply a heated salt pack to your infected ear. Place one cup of iodized or sea salt in the microwave for one minute. Put the salt into a clean cloth bag or sock and apply it to the infected ear. Leave it on your ear for 30 minutes. Any accumulated fluids in the infected ear will be drawn out by the salt.
- 5). Put garlic oil drops in your infected ear. The active ingredient in garlic is called allicin, which is natural antibiotic. Add two drops of garlic oil to your ear to help reduce the infection and pain. You can also use garlic in capsule form. Break one capsule and pour the liquid contents into the infected ear. You can buy garlic oil in capsules or bottles at any health food store.
