- 1). Open your three-dimensional modeling application. Popular modeling applications include 3DS Max, Rhinoceros 3D and Blender. 3DS Max and Rhinoceros 3D are commercial applications that you must purchase; Blender is a free, open-source modeling application.
- 2). Open the 3DS file you would like to convert. Most applications can open a 3DS file using "Open" under the "File" menu; however, you may need to import the file using "Import" under the "File" menu.
- 3). Convert the 3DS file by selecting "Save As" under the "File" menu, naming the file and changing the file type to OBJ. Some applications require you export the file to the OBJ file format by selecting "Export" under the "File" menu.
- 4). Check your converted OBJ file. You should have the OBJ file with the ".obj" suffix and an OBJ material file with the ".mtl" suffix. Some programs do not require the material file for simple geometries, but the material file provides information on colors and textures for the OBJ model.
