Genital Warts - STD
Genital warts are Sexually transmitted Diseases (STD) and are caused by a virus called Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).
These warts appear in the moist tissues genital areas and the anal areas of both men and women.
The warts are gray or flesh colored but may be darker also and is sometimes like cauliflowers in appearance.
Genital warts may be as small as 1 millimeter in diameter or may multiply into large clusters.
In women, genital warts may grow on the vulva, the walls of the vagina, the area between the external genitals and the anus, and the cervix.
In men, they may occur on the tip or shaft of the penis, the scrotum or the anus.
Genital warts can also develop in the mouth or throat of a person who has had oral sexual contact with an infected person.
Genital warts are most common among people who are involved in sexual intercourse with infected people.
The sexual contact may be oral, anal or vaginal.
It also passes from an infected mother to her child.
The symptoms may not be evident in some cases but in most cases they include small swellings in your genital area which may be flesh or gray colored, the warts will itch and sometimes pain on causing friction, there will be abnormal discharge, bleeding may occur, sometimes the openings are blocked by the warts.
Genital warts are not something that can be ignored.
They may lead to serious cases if left untreated.
Genital warts can be treated but the treatment must be done by the doctor because it is a sensitive area.
There are many ways in which the warts can be treated and they include: *Cryotherapy: this is the method where the doctor freezes the warts using liquid nitrogen.
* Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP): on this method a sharp instrument like a loop is passed underneath the wart and the wart is cut off the skin.
* Laser therapy is also a very popular method of removing warts.
Here, intense beam of light is used to treat the warts.
* Medications including imiquimod, podofilox, trichloroacetic, etc are used to treat warts.
However these medicines must be used only on the advice of the doctor.
* Electrocautery: in this procedure the wart is cut off the skin using electrically heated instrument.
Prevention is very important and one can prevent facing such embarrassing situation by using protection while having sex and sticking to one partner.
The infected person will have to act responsibly by staying away from sexual activities when he/she is suffering from warts.
