What Drives You?
An important question to ask yourself to understand yourself better is: What drives you? Money? But after you've got your Ferrari and beach house, what next? You will eventually get bored with your Ferrari, then what? WHAT DRIVES YOU? Social recognition? But why do you need other people to approve of you before you feel good about yourself? Can you not command respect from just being the person that you are? WHAT DRIVES YOU? Keep asking yourself that question until you find an answer that resonates with you.
WHAT DRIVES YOU? If you look into the Billionaires' stories, you will often find that money was not the motivation.
Bill Gates wanted "a computer in every house", Warren Buffet "wanted to be right in his investing decisions", Donald Trump wanted to "seal the deal".
Money was just the by-product of what they were really after.
So, what are you really after? What drives you? Why do you do what you do? I guess what I'm trying to get at is, imagine you are in a winter country and the temperature is -20 deg.
There is a snow storm outside and your fingers and nose are frozen and about to fall off from frost bite.
What would make you get out of bed to drive 20 miles across the country in the freezing cold and hail storm...
to do what you do? In the movie 'Shawshank Redemption', the main character Andy spends 20 years chipping away at a stone wall to dig a tunnel to escape and crawled through 500 yards of shit-infested sewerage.
Why? Because he believed so strongly in freedom that he was willing to do whatever it takes to set himself free.
What do you believe in? Freestyle motocross - Absolute nutcases.
One wrong move and it could be game over.
Even if these riders broke every bone in their body, you can bet they will be up the next day riding again.
But what if you die? No better way to die than while doing something you love.
And they wouldn't have it any other way.
Even if you didn't pay them a single cent, they would still be jumping ramps all day long.
Why? Because they absolutely love what they do.
Do you love what you do? Perfectionists are naturally driven by the notion of perfection.
That's why you see regular gym junkies 'perfecting' their bodies in the gym religiously every day.
Donald Trump came from a middle-class family, actually so did Bill Gates.
They could have easily sat around and inherited their money, but what would drive a 17 year old to find out everything he needed to know about real estate before he even became an adult and started working? So, what drives you? I don't think there is a right or wrong answer, it can be money, social recognition, love, freedom, your beliefs, vanity, fame, glory, whatever so long as you are aware of it and use it to your advantage.
You would definitely be in a more powerful position being aware of your motivational instincts than if you were not aware at all.
Also note that some motivational forces may be stronger than others, so you'd want to harness those forces more.
Eg.
Love would probably be a stronger force than hatred
