- 1). Turn on the Windows Firewall. Located in the "Control Panel," the Windows Firewall is a native Windows utility that is designed to prevent things like buffer overruns from happening. Simply turning on the Windows Firewall will dramatically decrease your chances of experiencing a buffer overrun.
- 2). Install antivirus and network protection software on your computer. Oftentimes network protection programs and even dedicated antivirus programs like McAfee Antivirus or Norton Antivirus come with automated utilities that monitor your computer for buffer overruns and stop them in their tracks.
- 3). Keep Windows updated. To do this, run "Windows Update" by clicking on its icon from your "Start" menu. Microsoft regularly updates the Windows operating system, and these updates are always available for you to download via this method. Updates can include security updates that can patch flaws inherent in the Windows operating system to stop buffer overruns before they happen.
