Social Networking Tool - Five Things That I Like About Yahoo Pipes
I came across Yahoo pipes about one year ago and looked at it as another potential tool that would work into the scheme of social networking.
At that time, I felt that it was too complicated and decided to put it aside for a while.
The other day, I was reading an article that mentioned how you could automatically Re-Tweet post on Twitter using Pipes.
The article peaked my interest, so I took another look at Pipes and found that it was not as complicated as originally thought.
Many people, such as me, do not or did not understand, the power or how to maximize the use of RSS feeds, but with Yahoo Pipes, this is a new beginning for me and I hope for others who read this article.
Here are the Five things that I like about Yahoo Pipes: Visual Editor - Pipes uses a visual editor that lets you create and edit Pipes so you can see the results as you create your new Feed.
The visual editor consists of the following three parts:
You can create and edit your Pipe by moving modules on the Canvas and then wiring them together.
This is accomplished by using your mouse to connect each module.
Customizing Your Feed - Once you have combined your feeds, you can then filter, sort, and edit your resources to get exactly what you want to see.
This take some practice but worth the time and effort.
For example, some government sites that I use, such as The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), publishes different feeds on various pages and in this case, it would be more helpful to combine and manipulate all feeds into one feed.
Creating a Badge - After you have developed your Pipe, you can then create a badge that can be used on the following platforms: TypePad, Blogger, WordPress, and IGoogle.
In addition, you can get an Embed code that allows you to post your feed in other areas of your website, for example a page dedicated to RSS Feeds.
Translating Feeds Into Different Languages - If you have feeds in various languages, you are able to translate your feed from and to other languages easily using the translate module.
This is a great tool that I am starting to enjoy!! I am finding that the possibilities are endless with Pipes.
You just need to be a little creative to get what you want.
