Guide Review - DVDRemaster 5

DVDRemaster from Metakine Inc. is a well-regarded DVD remastering application that can re-encode DVDs to fit on single-sided DVD blanks (compression), or completely re-encode the video so it can play on portable devices such as iPods, iPhones, and Apple TV.

DVDRemaster turns the complicated process of re-encoding, transcoding, and compressing video into a relatively simple task, with an easy-to-use interface that even novices will find easy to understand and use. That’s a good thing, because one of the weaknesses of DVDRemaster is its lack of a good help system or documentation. The program’s documentation seems to be limited to a few tutorials that take you through a process step-by-step, but without really explaining what is occurring or why you want to do something.

If you’re already familiar with working with video or DVDs, then you’ll find DVDRemaster’s interface to be pretty easy to use.

DVDRemaster can not only take a DVD and compress it to fit on a single-sided DVD blank, it can also burn the resulting DVD-compliant Audio and Video TS folders to a blank DVD. While not as feature-rich as Roxio Toast, a leading DVD burning application, DVDRemaster can easily handle burning DVD copies.

DVDRemaster is available in two forms, Standard and Pro. The Standard version works with a full DVD or movie. The Pro version adds a few editing functions, including the ability to remove black borders from movies and the ability to select specific video tracks.

Priced at $39.99 and $49.99 respectively, DVDRemaster Standard or DVDRemaster Pro can simplify the process of making backups of your favorite DVDs.
