A distillery process plant is used for fermentation, distillation and evaporation keeping the generated waste to a bare minimum. The basic process revolves around reduction of effluent by reducing it to mixed powder that could easily be discharged or be used as an alternative fuel for boilers.
The entire process hangs on the phenomenon of evaporation. Distillery effluent is fed to the vacuum evaporator to concentrate upto 60% of the solid waste. The entire process is performed in vacuum; vapours are generated as a result. To reduce steam consumption, thermal vapour recompression is used. This system uses Vapours generated in the evaporator, compresses it and the compressed vapours are used as heating medium in the evaporator. The water recovered from the evaporator has a low BOD, which is essentially what we want!
Next is the drying process for zero liquid discharge. The concentrate is thrust in the drying section for converting the liquid discharge into mixed fuel. The mixed fuel can then be used as secondary fuel. The entire system put together is used to yields phenomenal results. That's how distilleries and breweries in India should work like.
