Swat! What Can I Do About These Mosquitoes?

There is reason to believe that the mosquito believes herself to be the queen of the summer.
I say, her, because it is the female of the species that is responsible for the bulk of summer's mosquito mayhem of itching, slapping and infectious disease.
How can one protect against these ravages? Mosquito nets can protect you from mosquitoes in any climate or location.
There are many different designs available.
Whether you are sleeping in a single bed, a king size bed, a bunk bed, a hammock, or a sleeping bag, there are designs made just for you.
These bed mosquito nets can protect you from the diseases which mosquitoes may be carrying, which include malaria, the West Nile virus, Dengue fever, and others.
Over 500 million people are infected with mosquito-borne illnesses each year.
By taking the time to set up a mosquito net, you could save yourself from this misfortune.
For interior use, nets fall into two broad categories, the decorative and the functional.
The decorative is characterized by having overlapping panels that can be opened for decorative effect and entry, or closed to provide protection.
The protection offered by this style, while considerable, is not absolute, as the mosquito can work its way in through the openings.
The functional is sewn shut on all sides and top, and hangs to the floor.
Such a net must be picked up to enter from underneath.
It provides excellent protection.
Many nets are available soaked in insecticide to increase protection.
This, frankly, is a bad idea, as the insecticides permeate your sleeping area, and, in any case, lose potency against mosquitoes over time.
For exterior use, gazebo and umbrella netting, hammock netting, and sleeping bag netting provide protection each within its own particular niche.
  • Nets for gazebos and umbrellas generally have drawstring tops to fit the net to the support and plastic water tubing circling the base to weigh it down.
These water tubes generally perform better if they are filled with sand rather than with water as springing a leak is pretty common in the tubes.
  • Hammock netting is available both as nets that encircle the hammock completely, and provide entrance and exit through a side zipper, and more spacious nets that are open on the base and extend all the way to the ground.
    Both are effective.
  • Camping hammocks are also available with the net sewn into the hammock.
With this style of net the important distinction is to determine whether you need no see um netting with the smaller holes and decreased ventilation, or the regular mosquito netting.
  • Sleeping bag nets generally hang from an overhead, although there are some "pop up" styles available.
Whatever uses you may have for mosquito netting, using it will let you enjoy your summer fun without being bugged.
