Mating - A Crash Course in the Reproductive Cycle - Part 3

You must ensure that you vaccinate your dog before it becomes pregnant in case it is due to get vaccinated; you should not vaccinate your dog when it is pregnant because if you give vaccines during pregnancy it will affect its fetal development adversely.
You can achieve the following two goals by vaccinating prior to pregnancy.
1.
It boosts the immunity of would be mother.
2.
The vaccination protects the puppies from diseases by providing temporary immunity.
The puppies can build their own immunities only after they become a few weeks old.
The female dog becomes pregnant if the mating succeeds and it lasts for a period of 2 months like in metestrus; however you should take into account the variations for individual dogs.
The vets will be in a position to diagnose pregnancy once 4 weeks elapse after mating; however it is difficult to diagnose prior to that.
In order to diagnose better you must have a good history records of your dog which must enable you to find out the previous mating dates and details of past breeding problems; if these records are thorough it is possible to identify the potential problem areas.
It is easier to decide about a dog's pregnancy without having the breeding dates whereas it is difficult to decide that the dog is not pregnant without these dates.
The dog must be provided with a good balanced diet as well as vitamin and mineral supplements during its pregnancy which is absolutely essential; this is all the more important when it is nursing the puppies.
It is not common for dogs to have health problems that are related to pregnancy.
Abortion is very rare in dogs although it might occur infrequently.
Most of the problems are related to breeding, delivery, and nursing.
Birth of The Puppies The birth process is known as parturition and it consists of three distinct stages.
They are normally termed as stages 1, 2 and 3.
Stage 1 indicates the preparatory step for true labor.
The female might prepare a nest at this stage and you will notice a lot of changes in its personality such as irritability, nervousness and pacing.
If the body temperature of the female dog goes much below normal it is a sign of the dog having serious diseases.
If the rectal temperature falls below 101-102 degrees Fahrenheit which is normal temperature then it indicates that the dog will deliver the puppies within 24 hours.
If the allantoic membrane or water bag breaks it is a sign for stage 1.
At the time of rupture you will see the loss of considerable amount of fluid and this indicates that the labor is very near.
Stage 2 is known as true labor stage whereas stage 3 indicates nearing the end of labor.
The birth of the first puppy takes place within a few hours.
If you find that no puppy is born even after elapsing several hours you must call for your vet since it might be a cesarean case.
