How to Balance an 8 Inch Ventilation Damper

    • 1). Turn the furnace on to allow air to flow out of each grille. Balancing your ventilation dampers is impossible without airflow.

    • 2). Place your balancing hood over the grille that is downstream from the 8-inch ventilation damper and press the "Read" button. The display on the air balancing hood will display the airflow out of that specific grille in cubic feet per minute (CFM). A general rule is you want 1 CFM per 1 square foot of space.

    • 3). Adjust the ventilation damper accordingly. Loosen the wing nut on the damper, adjust it and then tighten the wing nut. If the CFM reading is higher than you want, close the damper slightly. Do the opposite if the CFM reading is lower than you want.

    • 4). Take another reading with your air balancing hood. Continue to adjust the damper in small increments until you achieve your desired CFM reading.
