Navigon 2000S Satellite Trouble

    GPS Receivers

    • GPS receivers collect information from satellites that circle the Earth at a minimum or 24 orbits to ensure all locations receive a signal from at least four. A receiver needs a minimum of three satellite signals to operate, but provides more accurate information with more. The signals can't penetrate metal or solid objects, but can pass through glass and some plastics. In downtown areas, a receiver can read signals bounced off buildings; but under heavy tree cover, it may not work well. The Navigon 2000S offers trip planning software and map presentations along with a voice to guide the user.

    Design Trouble

    • When turning on a GPS in a new location, it must take time to acquire enough information to make a presentation. However, the Navigon 2000S operates more slowly than most and may take up to 15 minutes to provide a presentation when first turned on and up to five minutes with subsequent starts in the same location. When moving, the slow operation may at times keep the map presentations behind the actual location by about a half a block. The voice presentation may also arrive late when recalculating a new route after not following the original voice instructions.

    Operational Trouble

    • Improper use of the Navigon 2000S may also cause troubles. It has a setting for a standby mode that will shut it off after 30 seconds. Check that it is not in standby mode for continuous operation. You can't remove the battery and it must be charged for hand-held use. Because of the small size, you may make mistakes making entries in the keyboard for location and mapping information. There are no internal adjustments or replaceable parts. Attempting to open it may void the warranty.

    Safety

    • When using the Navigon 2000S outdoors, keep it out of the rain and away from moisture. It's not waterproof. While using it in a car, the small presentation may cause you to give it too much attention, distracting you from driving safely. Traffic safety conditions should take precedence over instructions given by the Navigon 2000S or any other GPS guidance device. Only follow directions when it's safe to do so. Don't leave the Navigon 2000S plugged into the cigarette lighter socket when the car is parked for an extended period. Don't leave it on the dashboard in direct sunlight.
