- In left-sided heart failure, blood backs up in the lungs, preventing the lungs from taking in an adequate supply of oxygen. This also decreases the amount of oxygenated blood available to supply the needs of the body's organs.
- Right-sided heart failure causes blood to back-up into the legs and feet or even organs, such as the liver and kidneys.
- The symptoms of left-sided heart failure include fatigue, shortness of breath and increased coughing.
- Signs of right-sided heart failure usually include increased swelling of the legs and feet.
- The treatment for both types of heart failure include medications to strengthen your heart, diuretics to decrease extra fluid and a low-sodium diet.
