Neuro Linguistic Programming - Changing Your Mind

Neuro Linguistic Programming is a form of psychotherapy that was created in the 1970s by Richard Bandler and John Grind.
It was their desire to help people have a better and more fulfilled life.
Bandler was an information scientist and Grind a linguist.
Together they blended their knowledge to form a new therapeutic approach to individuals.
The name came from a basic belief behind the therapy that behavior is influenced heavily by a link between the neurological process of the brain and language.
Hence Neuro references the brain and linguistic references language.
At the root of the theory of Neuro Linguistic Programming is that behavior is determined by previous stimulus that our brains have had imprinted on them.
Once the brain receives this stimulus, it then processes it and relates it to a person's value systems.
After a connection between stimulus and values is made a behavioral response is then created by the brain.
The value systems of an individual are simply the inherent philosophy, cultural traditions, and beliefs that are acquired from childhood.
The stimuli can be anything detected by the senses.
They are perceived by the brain through sound, sight, touch, taste, and smell.
The value systems inside a person's brain are linked to language.
The language reinforces our beliefs even at a subconscious level.
Our attitudes about the external world and all of the stimuli that our brain receives are processed in a way that is already per-programmed.
Neuro Linguistic Programming seeks to find the connection between the undesired behavior and the original stimulus that created it.
Once this is found, the therapist will then be able to create a new association by using language to change a person's bad habit.
Often the stimulus cannot be removed or the originally stimulus is in an individual's past.
But with practice and help from a NLP therapist, a person can use new language to change the behavioral response.
The strength of NLP has from the beginning been the speed at which this form of therapy can be effective.
This effectiveness is true for a person with a wide range of problems from minor phobias and bad habits to such things as depression.
The focus by NLP has always been on using techniques that worked and discarding techniques that proved unfruitful.
The result is a therapy that gets results.
It is not only used for changing bad habits, but has also proven very popular among businessmen to help them become more successful in their particular line of work.
