How to Appear on Television & Radio Talk Shows

    • 1). Build a list of shows on which you would like to appear. You can build this list by searching the internet or focusing on shows you watch or listen to. Do not forget to expand into the world of satellite radio by checking out the websites of satellite stations, as there are many more opportunities in the new media world than on conventional radio. Consider narrowing your search by topics similar to yours.

    • 2). Put together a pitch. While you will adjust this slightly for each potential show, this will be a basic outline of why your story is something they will want to tell. Consider what will make your guest experience special.

    • 3). Draft a biography. If the show requests follow-up information, they will want to put together information on you. Compile any articles that have been written about you, as well as both a mini- and comprehensive biography about yourself. This will become like a press kit, selling your validity.

    • 4). Seek out a publicist. Again, using the internet or a phone book, look for a publicist who might be able to make some introductions for you. If they are really interested in your story they might be willing to cut you a decent rate. There are performance-based publicists who only charge per booking, but they are harder to come by. Most want to be paid up front for the work they put into the "campaign."

    • 5). Begin mailing, emailing, and calling. From the individual websites, decide how best to contact your target shows. Most likely, unless you have lots of money to spend, you will be doing this without the help of a publicist. That being said, you must be diligent about getting in touch with your target shows.

    • 6). Follow up with the booking agents. Be sure to follow up. Sometimes when you first get in contact with them it will not be the right time, but you will find that following up will get you some attention. Follow-up phone calls also serve to force their hand. Sometimes your email will go unopened, but the phone call will win them over.

    • 7). Prepare for when you do book something. As they can sometimes book people at the last minute, it helps to think about what your answers will be ahead of time. Consider all the questions they might ask and how you would respond. Wait for a call asking you to be on a show.
