Sailing Vacations in Belize

    • Sailing in Belize is a paradise for sea-loving adventurers.sailing image by Dev from Fotolia.com

Sailing in Belize offers you the opportunity to explore the second-largest barrier reef in the world with its cayes, palm beaches and mangrove swamps, as well as its large colonies of sea birds. You can sail to snorkeling, diving and fishing sites, and enjoy Belize's porpoises, manatees, butterfly fish and turtles. You need not remain at sea, however, for many sailing tours offer you the possibility of exploring rainforests and Mayan ruins.

    Crewed Sailing

    • Enjoy worry-free sailing and private luxury with one of the many Belize yacht charter companies such as Belize Sailing Vacations. You can choose your own deluxe catamaran size (from 42 to 50 feet) and crew from among multiple options catering to your individual needs and budget. A full-service crewed catamaran means not only adventures well-organized by your captain in kayaking, fishing, snorkeling or diving at the barrier reef, but a gourmet chef on board, serving you with wine and Belizean beer to accompany your memorable meals at sea.

If you are interested only in sailing, to Belize's Outer Atolls for example, and do not wish an entire crew aboard, you can also charter a skippered catamaran or mono-hull from a Belizean company operating out of Placencia in the south called Belize Sailing Charters (see References).

    Bareboat Sailing

    • If you are an experienced sailor, you can charter a Lagoon 410 catamaran and bare-boat sail inside Belize's hundred-mile barrier reef. Enjoy your own sailing expertise past numerous islands and cayes. Arrange your private beachcombing or windsurfing, diving and fishing. Provisions can be bought on some of the islands, as well as fresh fish from local fishermen who sail by. Some of the larger islands have restaurants offering fish dishes and other local specialties.

And if you are worried about your sailing skills, Belize Sailing Charters now offers ASA certified sailing instruction and specializes in catamaran training. Another possibility is hiring a "man Friday" for your bareboat charter. He or she can give you tips on where to anchor, fish or dive and can even teach you how to clean and cook your fish.

    Honeymoon Sailing

    • A creative way to experience a romantic yet adventurous honeymoon is by choosing a Belize sail honeymoon. All the details are arranged for you. You start out with three days in a thatched-roof, tropical beachfront resort with your own private veranda. Enjoy breakfast in bed and moonlight gourmet dining, or perhaps leisurely walks on the beach before the following three days and nights at sea.

With a gourmet cook on board, you can simply do nothing but enjoy fine meals, explore the barrier reef, sail past coastal villages, or be more active and snorkel or kayak. There is no schedule. Your captain is there to help you enjoy the kind of days you want at sea.

After sailing, there are still three more days on land, visiting Mayan ruins or the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, or listening to the howler monkeys and watching crocodiles on a jungle boat tour of the Monkey River. A honeymoon sailing trip can be arranged with Destinations Belize (see References).
