- 1). Pry the shingles above the damaged shingle carefully so that they do not crack, using a putty knife. Watch for flying particles.
- 2). Twist and pull the damaged shingle slowly until it tears loose. Maintain balance when the shingle comes loose from the nails.
- 3). Pull the nails off the roof with a hammer claw after the shingle is removed.
- 4). Insert the new shingle in place of the damaged one. Slide it under the loosened, undamaged one. Use nails near the top of the shingle to hold it in place. Set the shingle above it in place and hammer the nails back down on it as well. Watch your fingers when using the hammer.
