The Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System, or AHCCCS, helps residents obtain affordable essential health care services. There are many groups who can receive coverage under AHCCCS, but each of those groups has different requirement guidelines, including income. The income limits for each group are a set dollar amount, rather than a percentage of the Federal Poverty Level, and change April 1 of each year. Income limits are based on gross monthly income, meaning before taxes and other deductions are taken out, and deductions may be given for child care and work-related expenses.

    Child Only

    • The income limits for child only depend on how old the child is and who he lives with. As of April 1, 2010 the income limit for a child up to 12-months-old, who does not live with either parent, was $1,264 per month. This is the child's income only and does not include the income of the person who the child lives with. If the child lived with one parent, the income limit for the child and that parent was $850 per month. If the child lived with both parents, the income limit for all three people combined was $713 per month. The limits are different for children ages one through five, children ages six through 18 and married children.

    Pregnant Women

    • The income limits for pregnant women depend on if the woman is older or younger than 18 years of age, how many babies she is carrying and whether she lives with a spouse or her parents, if under the age of 18. As of April 2010, these limits ranged from $1,379 per month for a pregnant woman under the age of 18 who was carrying one baby and lived with both of her parents to $2,757 per month for a woman of any age who had no spouse, did not live with either parent if under the age of 18 and who was pregnant with triplets.

    Families With Children

    • The income limits for families with children depend on how many family members are living in the home, despite whether or not they are all applying for medical assistance. As of April 2010, the income limits were $903 for a family of one, $1,215 for a family of two, $1,526 for a family of three, $1,838 for a family of four and $2,150 for a family of five. Families of six or more were able to make an additional $311 per person, per month.

    Other Adults

    • This group includes low-income adults without children, blind or disabled adults and seniors who are over the age of 65. As of April 2010, an applicant who lived by himself could make up to $903 a month. An applicant and a spouse could make a combined monthly gross income of $1,215.

    High Medical Expenses

    • People experiencing high medical expenses can also qualify for AHCCCS health insurance. Income limits depend on family size. As of April 2010, income limits began at $361 for an applicant who lives alone and increased by $124 for each additional person who lives in the home.
