Detroit Diesel 8V 92 Specifications

    • Widely used in boats, the Detroit Diesel 8V-92 is a large and powerful engine that has been relied on for years. While other manufactures make boat engines, like Caterpillar, Volvo and Yanmar, the Detroit Diesel is unique in its power, strength and operating components. With a service record other companies can't compete with, Detroit Diesel has created a reliable engine out of the 8V-92 that can't be paralleled.

    Basics

    • The Detroit Diesel 8V-92 is a V8 engine rated for a maximum of 388 horsepower at 2,300 revolutions per minute. The bore and stroke of this engine depend on the application but has a small bore and longroke compared to four-cycle engines. The 8V-92 is 5.42 feet long, 3.75 feet wide and 3.92 feet tall. This engine is one of the heavier boat engines, compared to similar size engines, at 3,230 lbs. Because this engine is so big, it is rarely used on 30 to 40 feet boats. Yachts are popular applications for these engines.

    Two-cycle

    • The 8V-92 is a two-cycle engine. This means that the engine has a blower and four exhaust valves and works similarly to an outboard motor. The downward thrust of the pistons, past the holes in the cylinder liner, cause air to reach scavenging points in the engine. The blower then forces the air into the air galleries. Pressurized air then forces gases that have been burned through the exhaust valves. The combustion cycle is completed in just two cycles from this process, thus giving the designation of a two-cycle engine. This process is more efficient and causes a larger power gain. The engine has both water jackets and air galleries, which add to the complexity of the engine block. The Detroit Diesel two-cycle engine has double the internal parts than other V8 boat engines. This engine has more torque at a lower speed but has a lower RPM range compared to similar application boat engines.

    Extra Parts

    • Although the Detroit Diesel has double the parts of its competitors, the cost of maintaining these parts is relatively cheap. Detroit Diesel is the biggest manufacturer for diesel engines so they have very large production rates. This keeps prices down as well as the fact that Detroit Diesel parts are interchangeable. The downside to so many parts is larger wear problems. Also, more upkeep is needed to maintain this engine.
