Breathing Difficulty

• One common symptom of the echovirus is difficulty breathing or croup. Croup is swelling of the vocal cords, which can cause a heavy cough and mucous buildup in the chest and throat.
  
  

Swelling/Inflammation

• Another symptom of the echovirus is inflammation or swelling of the brain. This is caused by the infection taking over the body. Elderly or infant patients are more susceptible to this symptom.
  
  

Mouth Sores

• The echovirus can cause another virus called herpangina. Herpangina is a viral illness that causes a sore throat and a fever, and is accompanied by lesions or sores in the infected person's mouth.
  
  

Pericarditis

• Pericarditis can be caused by a complication of the echovirus. The condition develops when the pericardium that surrounds the heart is inflamed. It causes swelling in the legs and difficulty breathing.
  
  

Treatment

• Treatment isn't usually necessary for the echovirus because it tends to go away on its own. In fact, no antiviral medications are made specifically for the virus. Instead of treating the echovirus, doctors may try to treat the patient based on his other symptoms or conditions that have been caused by the virus.
