Vehicles

• In 2011, cars must be specifically designed to run on E85 fuel. These automobiles, known as flex-fuel vehicles, do not carry extra costs compared to conventional gasoline-powered cars. Ethanol-powered vehicles are not a modern invention; Henry Ford designed an ethanol-powered vehicle in the 1880s and designed the 1908 Model T to run on both gasoline and ethanol.
  
  

Emissions

• Compared to conventional gasoline, E85 blended fuel can reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions by 15 to 20 percent. Ethanol-blended fuels made from cellulose can reduce emissions by around 70 percent compared to gasoline, according to the EPA.
  
  

Oil

• The use of ethanol in fuels reduces the reliance of the U.S. on gasoline made from oil imported into the country. In 2010, the U.S. was the world's largest producer of ethanol, with the majority of ethanol-blended fuels, including E85, produced in the U.S.
