Paphiopedilum Orchid AKA Paph Orchid
The most common name for this orchid species is 'Lady's Slipper' or 'Slipper Orchid' which relates to the slipper shaped pouch of the labellum, but is also called 'Phaph Orchid' by commercial growers.
They are much sort after by collectors, whilst they don't have the spectacular color range of some of the epiphytic species, the stunning shape of the flower ensures its ongoing popularity.
To follow up on my previous article on this species I shall cover some of the more popular species giving a description and growing conditions.
It should be noted that making contact with the foliage as been known to irritate certain skin allergies.
I would suggest wearing thin rubber garden gloves when working with these plants.
All the following paphiopedilum orchids are evergreen terrestrials and relatively easy to grow in a greenhouse and hopefully will tempt you into searching them out through your suppliers.
