Peter Dolving Interview
< Continued from page 1
Chad Bowar: What are your expectations for the album?
Peter Dolving: I don't have expectations. Expectations are the enemy. If you're determined to shoot yourself in the foot, expectations are a fine way to go about it. Is there any way of knowing how anything further away than maybe your next couple of actions are going to turn out? Instead I try to keep focused on what's in front of me and do that as well as I can.
Are you looking forward to the Blackest Of The Black Tour?
Absolutely.
I get to see Glen Danzig every night for a couple of weeks! If you would have asked me if I thought I'd ever share a stage with Danzig when I was 16, I would have lied and told you I knew I would. But seriously, I am honored. The dude is amazing. Weird? Hell yes! But tell me, who isn't?
What's the strangest item in your tour rider?
2 onions. Don't ask.
What are the largest and smallest crowds you've played in front of?
I've played for a dog, the janitor and the wardrobe lady back in '93 in a civic hall in some outback abandoned steel mill town in Sweden with my previous band, Mary Beats Jane. We did a four week tour with Refused and it was miserable, though some nights were amazing. The largest crowd must be Ozzfest south of L.A. last year. I thought at the time that "Well this is cool.". But now when I look at pictures from that show I'm in awe at how much people there really were.
What was the first concert you attended as a fan?
Besides the folk music scene I grew up in as a kid, I think it was this UK band The Alarm back in the '80s.
I left that show a complete mess with a major hard on for it all, a week later I started my first band.
What bands did you have the best time touring with?
Kyuss and Machine Head. But there's no kiss and tell when it comes to people who treat you well.
Did anybody treat you poorly on tour?
Cradle of Filth. Actually they are the only ones. Funny, we've done headliners and support tours with Napalm Death, Testament, Exodus, Machine Head, Darkest Hours, Shai Huluud, Lamb Of God, Damageplan, Shadows Fall, etc. etc. But the only one's who treated us with obvious malice are Cradle of Filth. Maybe it's an image thing? Who knows?
Are you currently involved in any other projects besides The Haunted?
Bring The War Home and a project I'm doing with Shane from Napalm Death. It's all self loathing and hateful banter, Sonic Youth through Today Is The Day goggles. Arty grindcore.
You use the internet to communicate with fans and others and your writings have drawn some controversy. Have you found that instant accessibility and ability to post your thoughts a positive or negative?
Both. It's a strange thing this writing stuff. Trying to keep centered and stable in aim with so many questions around it and reactions to it. Mostly my stumbling ego gets a kick out of the attention, but I think it's kinda sad to see how much hate a lot of people carry around. But you know, it's like that, and that's the way it is.
Do you have any other passions or hobbies besides music?
Aside from my general obsessive nature, and not being able to refrain from trying my hardest to piss off fascist morons who love to display their lack of self respect through anonymous internet forums? Sure, I cut trees and chop wood. I play with my kids and run a lot. And I like to work in my yard, and I have a beautiful garden. Also I've got this twisted little project to build a park. Oh, I draw stuff as well.
Have you ever been arrested?
I can't answer that question in detail because I'm not a citizen of the USA and I really want to keep touring the US. Actually when I was younger I was arrested for a bunch of stupid stuff like waving to the King of Sweden( I got beat up as well) while being all punk rock. Once I climbed this 15 story tall building piss drunk, and that got me in trouble. But nothing serious though. I've been lucky that way, always getting away with the really stupid (crap).
What do you hate?
Human limitations and the arguments FOR them. And of course HIV, cancer, ebola, etc.
What's your biggest fear?
Not learning more from life.
What's your worst habit?
I pick my nose. And occasionally eat my boogers. It's disgusting - I hate myself for it and I'm really trying to give it up. And I obsess over sex.
What's the biggest misconception your fans or friends have about you?
That I'm a retard and/or genius. I'm none of those things really. I just don't know when to shut up. Oops, there I go again, see? That was a lie - I do know when to shut up, I just don't want to.
