What Are the Decisions in Project Control?

    Scheduling

    • The first decision you will make in project control is the deadline. The time you have to complete the project will dictate the rest of your decisions. To make the project run more smoothly, you can set smaller deadlines for portions of the project at intervals before the main deadline. Hitting milestones along the way is a better indicator of progress than slowly moving toward a goal far in the future.

    Methodology

    • A project can often be pursued along multiple avenues. As the head of the project, you decide which road to take. Look to your goals, weigh your options and take inventory of your resources. Considering these factors, you must then decide which approach will bring the project in on time and within budget.

    Delegation

    • A project is often a collaborative effort. Workers bring different strengths and perspectives in working toward your goal. As head of project control, it is your job to recognize and properly use the talents of your employees. Ask yourself which crew members are best suited to which jobs based on their strengths. Delegate responsibility appropriately and your project will be better for it.

    Changes

    • For all the planning and scheduling you will do as project head, you can't prepare for changes that affect the plan. Even the most meticulously planned endeavor can be hindered by factors beyond your control. Employees can lose their jobs, materials can be insufficient or the boss can move up the deadline. As project head, you must be able to quickly re-evaluate where you stand and revise your previous decisions to meet the demands of the new situation.
