Directions for Preserving Leaves

    Glycerin

    • 1). Fill a flat pan with two parts water and one part glycerin. Use a spoon to thoroughly combine the glycerin and water.

    • 2). Place the leaves into the glycerin solution so they are completely covered. Set a weighted object on top of the leaves if they float. Let the leaves sit in the solution for six days.

    • 3). Remove the leaves from the glycerin solution. Place them on a piece of waxed paper for a few days to dry.

    Microwave

    • 1). Lay the leaves in a single layer on top of two paper towels. Place another paper towel on top of the leaves.

    • 2). Microwave them for 30 to 180 seconds. The time it will take will depend on the dampness of the leaves to begin with. Check the leaves often until they are dry to the touch. If the edges of the leaves curl after microwaving them, they need to be heated longer.

    • 3). Remove the leaves from the microwave and place them on a sheet of waxed paper. Spray the leaves with an acrylic craft sealant to keep their shape intact. Let the spray dry completely before storing or displaying the leaves.

    Iron

    • 1). Place a leaf on a sheet of waxed paper. Place another sheet on top of the leaf. Put an old towel on top of the waxed paper.

    • 2). Set your iron on "warm." Run the warm iron slowly over the towel for about a minute until the two sheets are waxed paper have sealed together. Keep the iron moving at all times to avoid scorching the leaf.

    • 3). Remove the towel and let the waxed paper cool completely for at least 30 minutes. Carefully cut out the leaf with a pair of scissors. Leave a narrow margin of the waxed paper around the perimeter of the leaf to keep it sealed together.
