Make Like a Cow
Stella, the 42 year old from Queens, introduced her roommates to the wonders that is spirulina, which a blue-algae nutritional supplement, remarking that “[she’s] not a cow, {she} doesn’t eat grass, but [she] drinks it” especially since she’ll need the boost as Project Runway is a “serious competition.” Meanwhile, Suede whose name is identical to the textile made from cows (get it?) jumped into competition with Blayne for “most annoying competitor” for his tendency to speak about himself in the third person.Model Clients
Last week, the designers were randomly assigned models but this week, Heidi let them choose their own models which meant that one model was eliminated.
Like seasons past, the model paired with the winning designer would also be a winner by scoring a spread in Elle magazine. After the designers had picked their models, Heidi revealed that their models would also serve as their clients for this week’s challenge.Green Anxiety
This week’s challenge required the designers to create a cocktail dress for their models from “green” fabrics such as bamboo, hemp and jersey. However, there was a catch – the models/clients would go shopping for the materials as opposed to the designers, which caused much anxiety.Details
The models were given 75 dollars and 30 minutes to shop for materials. After they were done, the designers were given 30 minutes to consult with their models/clients and then 12 hours in which to create their designs.“Chickens with Our Heads Chopped Off”
That’s how Elena described the models’ shopping excursion and she was pretty on mark. Many seemed to have no idea as to what they were doing, with one even asking, “how much is a yard?” Somehow they all managed to buy their materials, although more than one model remarked that they probably forgot something.Good Nonsense
Jerell, the 28 year old from Texas, remarked that he hoped his model did not return with a “remnants of nonsense” but once he had inspected his model’s purchases, he enthusiastically declared, “you did so good!”Confused Strategy
Stella and her model seemed to have opposing fashion viewpoints.
Stella noted that her model wanted something flowy and “beachy” and that wasn’t Stella’s style at all. After consulting with her model, Stella noted that she “had no strategy, I’m just so confused.”Preach It, Leanne!
Leanne, the 27 year old from California, read our minds when she said this of Suede – “Leanne likes Suede but Suede needs to stop talking in the third person.”Darth-Licious
23 year old Blayne, who seems to be growing even more orange-colored from his fake tan, compared Heidi to Darth Vader, only he called her “Darth Licious.” He explained that like Vader, Heidi was shiny and pretty on the outside, but “crazy on the inside.”Prophetic Tim Time
In his pre-runway assessment, Tim only expressed confidence in one design – Suede’s, stating that he was “really excited” about Suede’s creation but warning him to keep track of the time. Otherwise, he noted that some designers (Korto, Wesley) needed to make their designs fit perfectly, or else it would be disastrous. He also noted that Leanne needed an “editing eye” for her design.Team Ugly Brown Fabric
Many of the designers had the same fabric (we’re guessing because some of the models just copied each other when shopping), so Jerell dubbed them “Team Ugly Brown Fabric.” We must say that he had a point as the satiny, chocolaty brown fabric was not the best color, nor the most flattering fabric.Special Guest Judge
This week’s special guest judge was actress Natalie Portman, who is also an environmental activist who has recently launched her environmentally friendly shoe line called Casan. No Immunity
This week’s winner would not get immunity at the next challenge. Instead, the winner’s design will be manufactured and sold on Bluefly.com.Working the Fabrics
The top 3 designers were Kenley, Stella and Suede, who all managed to work with their fabrics in ways that made the best use of the fabric. Kenley designed a simple sleeveless dress with a high ruffled collar from her beige organic silk fabric that the judges thought was “chic” and “so elegant.” They thought she was the only designer who knew how to properly use that type of fabric. Stella made a one sleeve mini-dress with lacing detail on the side that the judges thought was “very flattering.” They thought she was “much improved” from last week. Finally Suede used his red/white satin fabric by cutting it up into small strips and weaving it into a mixed design that he paired with a tulle skirt that Natalie Portman thought was “so sweet and young and fun.” The judges thought his design was creative and Heidi said that “if I was 10 years younger, I would wear [that dress too].”Team Ugly Brown Fabric Takes Two Hits
Two designers using what Jerell termed the “ugly brown fabric” landed in the bottom 3 – Wesley and Leanne. They were joined by Korto, whose strapless, tan dress had strange “fins” all over it, which Natalie Portman likened to “pieces on the inside of your jeans.” Michael Kors remarked that while he could understand Korto wanting to accentuate her model’s curves, even “curvy girls don’t want fins coming off their butts.” Wesley’s backless dress did not fit well, as Heidi noted that the hemline was “completely wavy.” The judges also thought the dress was too short and tight, and Nina Garcia commented that “shiny, tight and short is the fastest way to look cheap.” Finally, Leanne’s dress, which had panels of fabric haphazardly sewn all over her dress was deemed to not “have the right balance.” They noted a designer needs to know when to edit and that her design looked like “five dresses in one.”Rocking It
Suede was declared the winner and he happily crowed that “Suede [bleeping] rocked it.” He also noted how happy his mom would be for his achievement so far. We wonder what Mama Suede thinks about the third person-speak.School Project’s Not So Bad
It came down to Wesley and Leanne. We thought Leanne was a goner when Heidi told her that she gave them a “school project” for her creation. Instead, Wesley was cut for his ill-fitting and unflattering design.
