Quality Quilting Fabric - Its Benefits and Its Care

One hundred percent cotton is usually the fabric of choice for quilting fabrics being used by seasoned quilt makers.
The main reasons for that are cotton is easy to easy to mark, cut, sew and press, making it very easy to work with, and cotton is also very durable.
Not only is cotton strong and durable, it has a high tensile strength.
This wonderful fabric is very soft and hypoallergenic, meaning it doesn't irritate sensitive skin or cause allergies.
That is why it is also good for asthmatics.
The ends of the cotton fibers do not irritate the skin or cause static electricity, because they are spun very tightly into the yarn.
Another benefit of cotton is that it can be dyed easily into a rainbow of colors, because it is highly absorbent.
This gives us all of the gorgeous colors and the different shades, values and tones of our quilting fabrics.
The colors and values of the colors allow your design to be seen.
Your fabric selection is one of the most important parts of a quilting project.
This absorbency is not only a color benefit, but is also a health and comfort benefit.
Cotton absorbs moisture easily and will absorb body moisture and evaporate it into the air.
This allows your body to breathe and keeps you cool in the summer and dry and warm in the winter.
Cotton quilting fabrics also keep you cool, because cotton is a good conductor of heat and will draw the heat away from your skin to keep you cool.
Cotton is not affected by sunlight, so your fabrics will have a long-lasting vividness whether the bed is flooded with sunlight coming through a window or whether your quilt is used as a wall hanging in a sun porch.
Another reason quilters prefer cotton is that it is easy to keep clean.
You can wash cotton in your washer using the hottest water temperature available and virtually any detergent and bleach.
Cotton can even be boiled! Cotton fibers are thirty percent stronger when they are wet and stand up to repeated washings remaining free of static electricity.
This is of importance, because static electricity causes fabrics to cling and to soil easily.
When using one hundred percent cotton, most colors will not fade with repeated washings.
Some of the darker colors like black and navy may, however, lose some of their liveliness with time, especially if strong detergents and hot dryers are used.
Quilting fabrics made of one hundred percent cotton have the best of both worlds, the brilliance and abundance of colors combined with strength and ease of care.
