Frances Houseman (Gray), whom everyone calls Baby, vacations with her family at Kellerman's, a fictitious resort in the Catskill mountains, in the summer of 1963.
She becomes bored by the mundane activities her family participates in and decides to sneak into a Latin dance club.
There she meets Johnny Castle (Swayze) and his dance partner Penny.
One night she finds Penny in tears because of an unwanted pregnancy.
She first assumes Johnny was responsible, but it turns out that it was in fact Robbie, the dining room captain, who has the money for an abortion but refuses to pay.
Instead, Baby asks her father for the money without telling him what it's for, to which he agrees.
Baby finds she must also fill in for Penny in her dancing with Johnny.
The abortion turns out to be a disaster, being performed by a doctor without a license.
Baby asks her father, who's also a physician, to treat Penny's wounds, which he does, but he becomes furious with Baby as well as Johnny.
Meanwhile, Baby and Johnny end up falling in love and maintaining a secret intimate relationship.
When it is discovered that someone has been stealing from Kellerman's, Johnny is suspected.
Baby defends him by telling that she spent the night with him, but he gets fired as a result in any case.
Baby's father becomes more infuriated and won't allow her to participate in the final dance.
However, Johnny insists on dancing the final dance with her in any case and they do a terrific job.
